As one of the oldest family-owned businesses in the US, Bromberg’s is more than just Alabama’s favorite luxury jewelry and giftware shop. This Birmingham institution has become a piece of American history over the nearly 200 years since its founding in 1836. We offer the finest jewelry, timepieces, engagement rings, and more, but what sets us apart even further from other retailers may be our bespoke services. From professional cleaning and custom jewelry to watch repair and silver polishing, your precious keepsakes are in the best of hands at Bromberg’s. One of the most distinguished services we offer is our expert hand engraving of crystal and precious metals.
In fact, to call the art of engraving at Bromberg’s a service doesn’t do it justice—here, it’s a craft passed down through generations. Each custom engraved piece you commission with us is a unique work of art, a testament to the skills honed by our Master Engraver, Harold Herglotz Jr., and the tradition that has been in his family for decades. Discover the remarkable story of Harold Herglotz Jr., the man behind the engravings, whose dedication to his craft and deep family legacy continue to set Bromberg’s apart in the world of fine engraving.
Harold Herglotz Jr. has been hand engraving since he was just 12 years old, following in the footsteps of his father, the renowned Master Engraver Harold Herglotz Sr. Engraving runs deep in Harold’s blood—his father brought the rich crystal engraving traditions of Czechoslovakia with him when he immigrated to the United States.
Bromberg’s was fortunate to begin a working relationship with Harold Sr. in the early 1980s. For over 30 years, he made his mark on countless pieces before passing away. Today, Harold Jr. carries on that legacy with the same skill and dedication that defined his father’s work.
Harold Jr. was first able to practice his craft during his time in the US Military. There, he engraved various requests from fellow soldiers, often mementos from their travels and special keepsakes, including unit crests with soldiers’ signatures—matching and engraving each signature with remarkable precision. From his Military days to the present, Harold’s work is a testament to his exceptional talent and commitment.
After his military career and following the passing of his father, Harold took up the mantle of Master Engraver at Bromberg’s. On January 7, 2012, he officially began his full-time career in the same studio where his father once worked, carrying on the tradition with the same dedication and love for the craft.
The beauty of Harold’s projects is that each one is unique. No hand engraver can produce exactly the same thing twice, making each creation a one-of-a-kind treasure. His favorite projects are those where customers allow him the creative freedom to envision and craft what he believes will best suit the piece.
From engraved wedding rings to trophy engraving and everything in between, Harold has the ability to make your favorite jewelry or keepsake that much more special. But among the various materials he works with, crystal holds a special place in his heart. Describing the process as “like cutting into butter,” Harold finds immense joy in engraving crystal, turning ordinary items into extraordinary works of art.
One of the most significant challenges Harold faces is interpreting a customer’s intangible ideas and bringing them to life through engraving. Yet, this challenge is also what makes his work so rewarding. Each time he transforms a customer’s vision into a physical engraving, he’s not just creating a design—he’s crafting a lasting memory.
