Pantone’s Two Colors of the Year for Your Jewelry

Every year we look forward to the Pantone Color of the Year announcement. After 2020’s Classic Blue, we were surprised when Pantone announced not one but TWO colors for 2021: PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating.

These colors represent how “different elements come together to support one another,” and we can’t think of a better year to bring this intention into action.

According to Pantone, “Practical and rock-solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, the union of PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating is one of strength and positivity. It is a story of color that encapsulates deeper feelings of thoughtfulness with the promise of something sunny and friendly.”

When you look at a color like Ultimate Gray, it’s easy to imagine things that are stable, solid, and represent fortitude. While Illuminating gives us hope and cheerfulness and is much more aspirational.

The History of Pantone Color Selection

Pantone has influenced product development, purchasing, and trends in many industries, including fashion and jewelry, for over 20 years. The Color of the Year selection process is generally determined by several factors and influences worldwide.

Art, design, travel, and even technology, can lead to selecting a specific shade for a given year.

At first glance, these two colors might be polar opposites of one another, but when combined, they serve an inspirational hope for the year ahead.

Here’s how we recommend incorporating these colors into your jewelry wardrobe in the year ahead:

Have Fun With Yellow Gems

According to the International Gem Society, there are nearly 20 varieties of yellow gemstones. How many can you name? You probably know more than you think, with yellow variations available in:

  • diamonds;
  • sapphires;
  • garnet;
  • and tourmaline

Among many others.

From rings to earrings (especially studs that are oh-so-mask-friendly), yellow stones can brighten any dreary day and bring an element of cheerfulness and elegance to any ensemble. These gems are ILLUMINATING, indeed.

Embrace Metals in a Gray Tone

From sterling silver to white gold to platinum, metal jewelry in a gray or silvery hue can embody the ULTIMATE GRAY spirit.

Even many of our men’s watches in a steel material are suitable for the “stability” symbolized in one of this year’s Pantone selections.

Let The Two Shades Work Together

One trend we love this year is combining the two elements whenever possible. Whether it’s a yellow gem in a white gold setting or a masculine watch with both silver and gold color elements, there are plenty of ways to let these two shades play together.
