Ask a Bridal Consultant: Your FAQs Answered
With the help of our professional bridal consultants and gift buyers discover what to consider when creating your wedding registry— from timelines and essentials to the little details you may not have thought about yet.
When should you start creating your wedding registry?
“When to create a wedding registry?” is one of the most common questions we hear from brides-to-be. We recommend starting your registry 6–8 months before the big day (no later than 6 months)! This gives guests plenty of time to shop for engagement parties, showers, and, of course, the wedding itself. Plus, it allows you and your fiancé to take your time selecting pieces you truly love—no need to rush the process!
How many gifts should you put on our registry?
A good rule of thumb is to register for a little more than two gifts per guest, with a variety of price points. If you’re inviting 100 guests, aim for 225–250 items. This number may seem large, but keep in mind that you’ll be registering for multiples of the same items—8 to 12 dinner plates, salad plates, and cereal bowls, not to mention your glassware and flatware. It seems daunting at first to have to register for over 200 items until you remember it’s not 200 individual items to pick out.
This also gives guests plenty of options and the opportunity to choose something they feel excited about gifting. It also helps accommodate guests who may want to contribute to a group gift or purchase multiple items.
Do you have any go-to items for couples to add to their registry?
We love recommending fun, memorable pieces that really stand out! Such as:
- Unique serving pieces: Beautiful bowls or platters that make hosting more special.
- Colorful vases: A statement piece that adds personality to any space.
- A stylish bar cart: A fun, functional addition for entertaining.

- Image 4: Whimsical hibiscus vases from Vietri.
These are the kinds of things couples will always remember receiving and will enjoy using for years to come. They add personality and a touch of fun to any home. At the same time, it’s important to include everyday essentials that bring lasting value to your home, items like:
- High-quality linens: Elegant napkins and tablecloths for effortless entertaining.
- Durable dinnerware: Classic sets that transition seamlessly from casual to formal dining.
- Timeless glassware: Versatile pieces for everything from morning coffee to celebratory toasts.
A well-balanced registry includes both the exciting statement pieces and the essentials that will serve you for decades!

Napkins from Juliska are both practical and elegant items for your wedding registry.
What are things a bride doesn’t realize she needs help with until they meet with a consultant?
Many brides don’t realize how tricky it can be to blend traditional registry items with modern-day needs. For example:
- Choosing serving pieces they’ll actually use.
- Selecting china that’s both elegant and practical.
- Registering for items they’ll love years down the road, not just what feels necessary right now.
Another big realization? Having a variety of price points is key. Some guests may want to give multiple gifts or contribute to something larger, so offering a range of options helps everyone find something meaningful to give.
