Emeralds are a variety of the mineral beryl (along with aquamarine) and can range in color to somewhat light green to a very deep green with blue undertones. A one carat emerald will look bigger than a one carat diamond due to the difference in density of the two stones. Because emeralds are only 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness they must be treated with great care when being set in jewelry and when being cleaned. Most emeralds have natural inclusions and natural emeralds without inclusions are extremely rare.
